Learning Unreal Engine 5.1 by Shooting Balls at Barrels

My first little project using Unreal Engine

I have a not so big secret I’ll let you guys in on. Ever since I lead my favorite plumber, Mario, on his epic quest to save the princess, I have been enchanted by games (some may say addicted) and have dreamt of creating my own game for others to enjoy. Thankfully, I was exposed to programming in elementary school which lead to a passion for software development as a teenager and a successful career in tech. Through the years, I kept gaming but never forgot about that childhood dream.

Since the pandemic (and recent tech layoffs), I found myself with extra free time and decided to get back into creating little games for fun. Serendipitously, I saw a learning Unreal Engine 5.1 online course bundle last week and decided it might be a fun way to brush up on my super rusty C++ skills.

This is the first project in the course that shows off Unreal Engine’s physics and graphics capabilities with a game shooting cannon balls at barrels. It’s not going to win any awards. But it was a fun start. I’m excited to play under the hood with it’s powerful capabilities like Nanite and Lumen.

Stay tuned as I post more Unreal projects from the course, previous gaming prototypes I’ve worked on, and other things on my game development journey.
